About

Friends of Flannagan Pond is an informal group of neighbors committed to improving the quality, health and maintenance of Flannagan Pond in Ayer, Massachusetts.  Flannagan (also known by some as Fletcher’s Pond) is a man-made pond,  about 90 acres in size.  It is fed by Sandy Pond, and subsequently Flannagan Pond flows into Balch Pond.

Though the pond is surrounded by homes, there is public access in at least five locations for fishing, canoeing and kayaking.  For many years the pond has suffered from excessive vegetation such as milfoil, fanwort and lilypads.  In addition, there has been little vigilance given to maintaining the dam that control the water levels throughout the year.

The purpose of this site is to give evidence of the poor condition of the pond, and to encourage town and state officials to live up to their responsibilities to the citizens of Ayer in regards to controlling vegetation and proper water levels.  This may include the use of harvesting equipment, dredging, chemicals and proper dam maintenance and dam management.  The reasons for this include recreational use, public safety and protecting local property values.

So in summary, that is the singular issue: the health and maintenance of Flannagan Pond.

Regards,

Chuck

    Hello,
First of all..Thank You! For starting this movement. I’ve been on the pond for 1 years now and I’ve watched it deteriorate terribly over the last 5 or 6 years. When I call the town offices to ask about vegitation control they tell me it’s going to be next year…for 3 years now.
I’m totally on board with this!

I was talking with my wife, Denise, about the meeting last night and she came up with the idea of looking for external funding. It seems that there is a great discrepancy between the looks of our pond and Sandy Pond — something that goes back to funding.

Denise & MGS, I agree, we need to look at every potential source of funding, but nothing that let’s the Town off the hook for their responsibility in maintaining this valuable asset. Sandy Pond will always look different/better because of the fact that is is a great pond, it is a natural bowl shape and it is deeper. Flannagan Pond will always be shallow and will always have some vegetation present. But Flannagan is not a swamp and it should not be ignored. Thanks.
